Things Are Lookin’ Up: Investor Activity Reaches All-Time Highs

The day this issue was being put to bed (in January), the Dow was flirting, precipitously close to topping 11,000. Isn’t this amazing?….Right beside announcements and revelations of serious troubles, plant closings, etc. by two of the big three U.S. automakers, with the aftermath of Katrina still to be dealt with, with a war still underway, investor confidence and investor activity within an inch of all-time highs!

Spending on biomedical research in the U.S. more than doubled in just 2 years, from 03 to 05, topping $94-billion. 57% of the dollars came from the private sector, too. Funding from pharmaceutical and medical device firms increased by 102%. This is the pay-off/trade-off to the advertising by and prosperity of the much-maligned pharmaceutical industries. Here’s Johnny!

You might not think of a book about Johnny Carson as a business book. But consider this: lasting partnerships in any field – business, entrepreneurial activities, sports or entertainment – are really quite rare.

Far more common are the stories of two people who start together, create some success together but wind up split like a married couple in a bad divorce, with acrimony, finger-pointing, bitterness and a lasting grudge.

In business, the lasting partnerships behind great companies built from the ground up are actually so rare you can probably name most of them. (For example, Walt and Roy Disney; DeVos and Van Andel at Amway. Go ahead, see if you can name even ten!).

And the same is true in entertainment; the broken pairs are far more common (Martin & Lewis, Sonny & Cher).
