Chris here with a very personal update and favor for my Dad…
(FYI – a new article series and video training are in the works, so consider this post the calm before the next content storm. ) š
Long-time subscribers may remember that years ago my Mom (Mary Ann) battled breast cancer.Ā Although it was difficult at the time, I pulled back the curtain to share that struggle with you in my email newsletter (back before blogs even existed).
With a great dose of humanity and understanding, my subscribers flooded her inbox with prayers, support and kind words that brought many smiles and helped her face the surgeries, treatment and the unknown.
Fortunately, she won that battle and has been cancer-free for 5+ years!Ā To celebrate, we held giveaways for you, tied in our sales events with the Susan G. Komen for the Cure charity foundation and much more.Ā I’m deeply grateful for the support you all gave her.
Now jumping ahead years later…
You may have realized that I’ve been “quieter” on the blog and with my emails for much of this year.Ā There’s a good reason for that.Ā And it’s time let you know why…
Toward the beginning of this year my Dad, Rich Zavadowski (one of my close friends, and also the creator of the “Government Contract Secrets” course my company publishes), became very ill…so bad that he had to stay home from work.
I’ll spare you all of the details, but the result was he looked like a pale ghost, with zero appetite or energy.
While the dozens of tests started to point toward a lymphoma, his lymph node biopsy continued to baffle the local pathologists and labs.Ā It took almost three months of chasing down doctors and labs (totally unacceptable when you’re dealing with someone’s life!) until we got everything over to the National Institutes of Health (NIH)…specifically the National Cancer Institute.
Then within days this top notch facility finally nailed things down and handed my Dad a confirmed diagnosis: Stage IV Peripheral T-cell Lymphoma, unspecified. š
Basically his cancer was as advanced as it could be (appearing in his blood, lymph nodes, bone marrow and metastasized on his leg and a couple ribs).Ā While lymphoma is the fifth most common cancer among men and women in the USA (approximately 74,340 new cases in 2008 alone), the type my Dad has is very rare.
Because so few people have this, thereās not enough data in the medical community to suggest the ābestā treatment for this (heck, there’s not even a standard treatment for this).
ā- SIDE NOTE ā
If you know anyone with ANY type of cancerā¦get them to an NCI āComprehensive Cancer Centerā ā because as weāve quickly come to learn, the quality of care and expertise in the cancer field is all over the map. There isnāt always one right treatment…but there are wrong ways to treat (our initial doctor had recommended a surgery and treatment that were TOTALLY unnecessary…and could have killed him!). When someoneās life is involved, donāt settle for only the local docās opinion…get an expert to weigh in.
ā- SIDE NOTE ā
Well, after a few trying days and thinking long and hard about the options, my Dad decided to be part of a clinical trial (called a “protocol”) run by NIH’s NCI (a world-class, amazing facility that gets patients flying in from all over the place).
While itās a much more aggressive treatment, with increased side effects and risks, itās also something they are testing specifically for t-cell lymphomas.Ā It involves 5 days of steady chemotherapy…repeated every 3 weeks over a period of about 4 months.
Anyway, I promised him at the beginning of this journey that I’d be there for every doctor’s visit, test, treatment and more.Ā Ā So that’s why I’ve been a little quieter this year — I’ve been helping Dad and Mom go through all of this, along with organizing all the test results, appointments and more.Ā (And MAJOR credit goes to Mom — Mary Ann — who helps him through this 24×7.Ā She’s an unsung hero in all of this!)
It’s times like these when you truly realize what a blessing having an online business is!
Now the National Cancer Institute estimates in January 2004 alone, there were 10.8 million Americans alive with a history of cancer.Ā And this year, 1,437,180 new cases are expected.Ā Survival rates have increased as detection *and* treatment methods have improved, but we’ve still got a long way to go.
Chances are you or a loved one have been touched by cancer, so you know first-hand how emotional and scary this journey is for an entire family.
That’s where YOU (and my personal favor) come in…
My Dad is going through chemotherapy as we speak, and soon he’ll receive follow-up test results showing how well treatment has worked so far.Ā (Regardless of the outcome, he still has several more months of getting knocked on his ass by the chemo.)
Just like I did with my Mom years ago, I’d like to ask you to leave a comment on this blog with an inspirational thought or ‘get well’ message for my Dad, Rich Zavadowski.
I’m going to print the comments off and put them in a “Happy Thoughts” binder I’ve created for him to chronicle the outpouring of support (and emails) we’ve been receiving from family and friends online.Ā Your kind words posted here will go directly into this special book for him.
With cancer and the drugs he’s on, there are some very tense, depressing days, so when he’s a little down or needs a “pick me up” to get his head back in the right place, he can just turn to any page and see how much positive energy is coming his way.Ā It’ll help give him strength for when he beats this cancer and returns back to a normal life!

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. If you have a few hours or a few days when you feel down, it’s ok. Don’t beat yourself up for being upset. I don’t know how you feel, but I do know that sometimes you just have to feel sad so you can get back to being able to handle it. No one can do your treatment for you or give you a day off, which is tragic and unfair. You really should get a buddy who could do just that. But we are pulling for you and sending you all our love. I wish I could give you a day off.
I have great feelings about your treatment. I think you made the right decision.
When I’ve been really down, the thing that helped me was I closed my eyes and pictured every person I love. And I felt that feeling when it starts in your chest, and then I imagined that love spreading throughout my entire body. I try to expand the love feeling so I can feel it in every cell of my body at the same time. For me it’s like a warm soothing tingle. It may sound a little silly, but it always makes me feel at peace.

Arenāt you glad that God is a healer! It doesnāt matter what is ābrokenā in your life today, Godās nature is to bring you complete healing. Do you need healing in your body? Your mind? Heart? Finances? Relationships? God is your healer. Notice what the Psalmist says in this verse: He binds up their wounds. In the natural, if you have a broken arm, it doesnāt just heal over night. The doctor makes a cast to hold it in place and protect it. He binds up your wound. In the spiritual realm, God does the same thing. He wraps Himself around your brokenness and protects the wounded area until it is strong enough to function properly again. The Bible also says that He is a restorer. That means that when He does a work of healing in our lives, He makes us better than we were before. If youāre going through the healing process today, know this: it may take longer than you planned, but God is binding up your wound. He is protecting you and healing you. He will bring you out better and stronger than you were before. He will take you to a place of complete healing so that you can live the life of victory He has in store for you.

my mother got cancer at age 80, & she refused “Chemo” & I would call in to see her three times a week, & every time I walked in & asked “How are you mom?”

My thoughts, hopes and prayers are with you and your loved ones at this really tough time.
Having gone through breast cancer nearly 5 years ago (clear now thankfully) I know at first hand what a traumatic time you must be having. I found it particularly hard since I’d lost my husband who was only 48 to a massive heart attack, totally out of the blue, just a year earlier.
I clung to the love, support and prayers of my lovely daughter who was only 10 at the time and my wonderful mum and dad. Their strength pulled me through the difficult days just as I know your family and friends will be rallying around for you.
I know that you are facing a much, much tougher time than I ever did due to the radical chemo.treatment you’re undergoing but you’ve just got to keep on fighting back – don’t let it beat you. It’s little comfort when you’re suffering all the nasty side-effects and feeling so ill but you are doing something wonderful for your fellow human beings by taking part in this new research. That’s amazing.
I pray that there will be good news for you and your family in the coming weeks. Keep fighting.
Rich, don’t know you personally and I only know your son through email. All I can say is this, knowing your son and his integrity, and seeing how close he is to you, well lets just say “the apple does not fall far from the tree”. You can and I presume are very proud of your son as he is of you. It is like Lara says in her post above, focus on the people you love and the love they have for you. Focus on bright days, beautiful sunsets, stars in the night sky. The beauty that is all around us and the greatness that lies within us all.
This world is a great place because of people like you and your family.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and may you only feel the love and caring of all of the people who are on and at your side every moment of the day.

You are brave and smart – brave to be testing a rigorous chemo program and smart to have sought a second opinion.
As an RN who has worked with numerous cancer and hospice patients, I can tell you that those two qualities are in your favor for long-term success in your health battle.
My husband and I have BOTH survived those supposed death sentences and are going strong. You can do it too!
I would like to suggest that you get a daily dose of laughter and silliness. My husband and I watched the most ridiculous movies over and over cause they made us laugh.
As a matter of fact, one of our favorite movies is ISHTAR, because the characters keep struggling hysterically as a team through adversity. We love that movie and it was voted “The worst movie of 1989”. No accounting for tastes, is there?
LIVE, LOVE, LAUGH! is a wonderful motto and it works!

Chris, it’s good to known your Dad caught this is time to be able to followup with treatment. Rich keep a positive attitude, be strong an you will pull through it.
Last year my Dad was released from the hospital, after the Doctors told him there ws nothing they could do, due to the advanced condition of his cancer. My oldest daughter I got on to the plane that weekend and were at the Houston airport, when we got word Dad had passed away. He had so many other medical conditions, that somehow the cancer had gone undetected.
So be grateful for the time you have with family and loved ones. None of us know when the Lord will call us to be with him.

Hi Chris, some info for you. Google a herb called “Graviola”, & also “Pau’D Arco’, & “Cats Claw”, & then check out “Marine Phyto Nutrients”. Seeing your Dad is going to have “Chemo” I would suggest that he take some Acidopholous & Bifodus; which are live friendly bacteria that the digestive-system needs to help digestion;
as the ‘Chemo” kills off the body’s friendly bacteria, also a Multi Vitamin & Mineral supplement would be more than helpful, & after the “Chemo” he needs to boost his immune system again, so you might also have a look at “Echinacea”.
I would like to state a fact to you, & that is:- the Human-body is meant to be in a negative-ph state, & cancer CAN Not live in a negative-ph environment.
You might also want to Google “Natural Cures for Cancer” &”Natural Therapies for Cancer”.

I am saddened to hear of your news, yet at the same time I am in awe of your son Chris. Cancer is a hard thing to deal with and many times because people feel helpless they abandon those they are closest to because for some reason they can’t deal with it. I praise you on the way you raised Chris – because as tough as it is for him, he’s facing it, he’s there for you & others, he’s finding solutions, he’s reaching out to others, he’s asking for help. So many people are afraid to ask for help, but its in the asking that we receive and in the receiving we become stronger to give more of ourselves to others. And when we give our best to others, then they in turn learn to give the best of themselves.
I can’t say I understand why things happen in life or why you are faced with cancer. But I know there are reasons – reasons we may never understand. And I just ask that you look at some of the blessings in this. I bet you feel so much closer to Chris and others that you couldn’t have possibly experienced without going through this. Closer and sharing a love that only you can understand the depth of this love. So on your down days which is normal to have, I challenge you to look at some of the blessings that have come out of this, for not only are you receiving blessings because of this, but others are too and you’ll never know how deeply you’ve touched peoples lives, but just look at obvious ways you have and hang onto those moments so you can draw on them on less than optimal days.

Hang in and think positively about your outcome. God made our bodies to heal themselves, and He must be in control. #1 is to make sure you are accepting Christ as your Saviour. Our problem is that, in order to rejuvenate our bodies, we need to put back into them the nutrients that God used to build them. I have a son who is facing possible ampuutation because of what we believe was medical malpractice when he had some surgery to correct some things that needed to be corrected as a result of a serious accident at his work in 2004. The medical field had no way of treating the staph infection in his ankle bone. At this point, they are almost requiring that he have the amputation. We have him on a regimen of food supplements which have saved several people who were at death’s door with cancer. What they did was to rebuild their immune system and they were healed. My son’s last tests showed that the supplements were killing the infection, and we are believing that the bone building supplements will restore that ankle bone. Our problem is getting the medical profession to give him time to heal. I believe God can heal you and give you back the life you once had. If you want information about the building of the immune system, etc,, I would be only too happy to share it.
Rich, you are blessed, sir….with a son who loves you enough to share your ordeal with his online community…with friends and family and most of all a Saviour who
cares more deeply than any of us ever could for every soul He has brought into this life. In God’s Sovereign Will, everything we experience has a purpose to make us look to Him, trust Him and thereby grow stronger, love more deeply and overcome the challenges of this span of time we can life.

I had a sister who died 19 years ago from cancer, I know she is in heaven now with our heavenly Father. I have fought cancer three times in the past 30 years and God has healed me each time. I fight with Him and tell him it is not fair, three times is too much, but He never gives more than we can handle and is with us always. Do Not give in or up to Satan, God is always in control. Use this illness to praise and glorify God, use it to testify to His comfort and strength. Use this illness in any way you can, then step back and watch God work a miracle. I am a prayer intercessor at my church, (Full Gospel) in Kibler Park, Johannesburg, South Africa and have seen many miracles of God’s healing power. Rest assured I have a book that I write all prayer requests in and they do not get crossed off the list, until God answer, your name is now in the book and will remain there until your healing is complete. I will also pass on by text message on my mobile to our prayer group and friends, this will be forwarded to hundreds of God’s children who will all stand in and continually be praying for you. If He can cure me three times, He can do it for you. Just stay strong in faith, put your hand in His. His Word says that He will never let us go, this is true.
God’s promises are like the stars, the darker the night the brighter they shine. God is great, life is good taken one step at a time with your hand in His. Keep faith, remember when you feel like you cannot pray and do not know what to say, He is there and looks into your heart and sees all, He understands, has mercy and an abundance of Love for you. Grab His hand now and never let go. I have a load of encouraging little poems and I will send you one every now and then, just to remind you that you are not alone, God is with you and there are a lot of people who care, even if you have not met them. Love is God’s weapon and strength that He gives us to share with each other, seen or unseen. Be strong and may God bless and strengthen you.

Words cannot say how timely your sons email was today! ( I was wondering if I had unsubscribed as I had not heard from him in a while.) While I was at the computer here wallowing in my own self pity, God threw Chris’ email at me saying “Wake up, and realize what is important.”Reading his email brought me back to when I took care of both parents with cancer. It was a most trying time for all, but the depth of caring and relationship bonding at that time was unequaled. Cherish the love, tears, laughter and memories. Those are the things that bring us through the tough times. Rod beat me to it by quoting Joel Osteen, but he often says “We are the children of the most high God. He will see us through with our faith. Our faith in Him is required for His action. No matter what happens, you and your family will prevail in His eyes. Is that not what we are here for? You are special because you have been chosen by God himself to help others – what a compliment He gave you! You are obviously worthy of his faith in you!
I’ll pray for you daily but something tells me He already has it taken care of!

Eight years ago I too was diagnosed with cancer and can share with you the shock, disbelieve and a whole range of other emotions that one goes through at that stage.
It is very important to go with the flow and thank God continually for being healed. With every chemo, each radiotherapy and every pill I affirmed: “I thank you God for the healing tha is now taking place”. Keep positive and help yourself to a good dose of healing. My prayers are with you.

The best advice I can give is just to get lots of fresh air, nurture and spoil yourself with all the beautiful things you enjoy doing, watch funny movies, spend time with loved ones and know that you are in Gods hands and you don’t need to worry.
scientifically speaking it is true that the body cannot have disease if it has an alkaline ph. The ideal ph to have is between 7.3 and 7.4 you can purchase cheap ph sticks from the pharmacy to test your blood and tissues to see how acidic you are. Then I would just try to do as much as possible to to get to a healthy ph and your body will heal itself.

I’m sorry your having to take all the crap you’re taking. I lost my father to alzheimers 22 years ago. I miss him very much.
He and I made peace with each other just before he left this world and I can tell you it was the most important thing we ever did with our relationship.
Today I am a better man and father than I ever was because of his influence on me AFTER he left.
Once I had kids, I realized I was more like him than I ever thought. What a wake up call that was.
I’m sorry I can’t take your pain away but I can offer some advice. Get close to your loved ones and tell them how much you love them and what you think of them.
Tell them stories about your life. Tell them your mistakes and what you learned from them. Maybe they’ll learn from you too. Tell them everything.
Your story will live on through them as they tell their kids.

What an amazing man you must be to have become a father to your wonderful son! You must have integrity, thoughtfulness, patience, generosity, and a host of other great qualities.
Use those very positive qualities to focus on getting strong, having courage and hope even when you are afraid, and letting those who love you be a part of your treatment and recovery. So often we feel that we are in it alone, but any threat to one of us is a threat to all, and meeting this challenge head on with your family by your side is the strongest medicine.

First let me say that cancer is not a death sentence. I am a survivor myself and understand the fears, anxiety and depression that goes with this disease when you hear “you’ve got cancer.” As a nutritionist I was diagnosed in 1999. Thank God for Dr. William Donald Kelley who treated 33,000 patients in 38 years with a 95% cure rate. Yes, there is a program your dad can follow. It is not cheap but reasonable compared to many alternative methods. I work with many colleagues, have published a book for Dr. Kelley who passed away in 2006 (not from cancer). He had pancreatic cancer and given 2 months, cured himself and was cancer free for 42 years. His demise is questionable and I will not enlarge on it. Miine had spread to the hips, spine, shoulders, did not have any chemo, radiation or surgery, in my 80’s and still practicing and working with many patients who are getting results. Don’t give up — there are many things you can do and products that will help

Reaching out to strangers in a time of emotional vulnerability is not so daunting when you are in a community network of people as caring as those who have sent cheers your way. Add mine. My sister was once a patient at NIH after I, too, found that I felt better knowing such a resource provided more investigational results than some our family had previously used. So, feeling more connected to you because of the way your son has expressed himself and shared so touchingly about you, I no longer feel like a stranger to either of you. In my head and heart, I believe that you will face your challenges with added strength knowing you are now hugged in spirit by a global circle of well-wishers. And, you are in my sincerest prayers.

God is still the same God, and He wants us walking in divine health. I ask the Lord to rebuke the spirit of infirmity off of your father, and send the healing angels to him.
There is so much from doctors now, and I had a CD from a Doctor that had cancer, they cut some out, but could not get it all.
She started juicing fruits and vegetables. You can get her CD from “HALLELUJAH ACRES” hacres.com for the CD by Lorraine Day, M.D.
Also there is a place where you can order capsules that have 17 different kinds of fruit and vegetables that doctors are recommending for people who don’t get their 17 fruits and vegetables a day. Juicing is best though. The Dr. who did the CD has been totally healed for years. God is the healer, but He also gave us doctors.

The best part about it is the survivor stories.
I would say to your dad, while the treatment for cancer can encompass your life, you are NOT the disease. Remember and visualize your best self.

Hello Chis. I will be praying for your dad and your entire family. I am also drealing with stage four prostate cancer which has spread to my bones and at this time undergoing radation and then chemo. Chis your dad will be added to support group and we will be praying for him.
This is easier said than done but it does work if you totally believe it does.
Totally block out any thoughts that you have of bad health and expect to be fully recovered soon and act to the extent that you can as if you are getting better now.
